The First Day of the Week

"Sunday morning ... makes me feel ... so godly ... pardon me ... if I shake your soooooooooul."

So sang Andre Benjamin on a song about the first day of the week. Football, food, church (maybe?), not having to be at work - these things come standard with a Sunday.

... and if you live in Houston, TX ...

There may be a few extra staples to throw in the mix. For example, in one part of the city it is not unusual for guys to drive (slowly) up and down a certain boulevard to show off their custom paint jobs, exquisite sound systems, and various other modifications to their vehicles.

That atmosphere is the inspiration behind #StyrofoamSundays.
What does driving in an elaborately modified vintage American vehicle have to do with a cup that couldn't even fantasize about being biodegradable?

Hold on ... LEAN a little closer.

You know what? Nevermind.
Some people get it, some people don't.

In the meantime, if you happen to be sipping something (anything) out of a Styrofoam cup, snap a selfie. Use the hashtag #StyrofoamSundays so we can enjoy refreshments together in this cyber kickback. We're on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

Chastity Isn't So Sweet After All

Virgin Sour
Believe it or not, there really isn't much to say about the Virgin Sour.
That's partially due to the fact that the drink speaks for itself (try some if you doubt it).
It's also because there's no complex back story to its origin.

Amazed by the reception of the Phorbidden PhruitBert spent nearly two years trying to figure out what to follow it with. He frequently thought of adding a cherry limeade to the team, but he wasn't sure of which ingredients he'd use. The task became unnecessarily challenging because he was trying too hard to start from scratch.

Fortunately, one day the obvious answer slapped him in the face. Bert didn't need to reinvent the wheel - he just needed to put a refreshing twist on cherry limeade. Once he cleared that obstacle and crafted the third installment for Tea Time 24/7, there was nothing left to do besides assign a name.

This would be the perfect blend of sweet and sour; strong yet smooth. What do you call a tangy drink that's so easy on the palate you could (in theory) serve it to a toddler? How do you identify something that tastes innocent but still conceals a malicious kick? Virgin Sour. What does it mean exactly? Ask someone who knows.

The Object of Lust

Phorbidden Phruit

Generally speaking, women like drinks that taste fruity. Ask any bartender. Is that "rule" set in stone? Of course not - there are women who like stiff drinks and men who like fruity drinks. Who comes up with these rules anyway?

(That's a rhetorical question.)

How about another origin story? Remember our two bartenders at (the restaurant formerly known as) Danny's Porch? They were working a shift together when the liquor order arrived ... and a new raspberry flavored spirit had been temporarily introduced to the roster.

Roger almost immediately suggested that he and Bert find a use for it:
"We gotta do something with this."
Bert agreed, suggesting they try raspberry lemonade. They tossed a few ingredient ideas back and forth before settling on what would become the "flesh and bones" of the beverage. Still, a certain kick was lacking, and Bert made a daring suggestion to top it off. This proved to be the breath, the spirit that animated the drink so that it came to be a living cocktail.

All that remained was to name the new creation. Bert, who enjoys biblical trivia, suggested "Phorbidden Phruit". Why?

1. There is a hint of mystery to it, which could lure the curious into trying it for the first time.

2. Both Roger and Bert would occasionally replace the letter "F" with "Ph" as a joke of sorts that other college students and graduates would recognize.

3. As the saying goes, "gin makes you sin".

The collaborative effort between these two men turned out to be a success, arguably even larger than Bert's Peach Tea had been. Once the word got out, enthusiasm for the new cocktail spread like wildfire ... especially among female clients (but that's just a coincidence). Should you be tempted to try it for yourself, please take note of the symbol of caution. You've never tasted a raspberry lemonade quite like Phorbidden Phruit.

National Iced Tea Day

KICK YOURSELF!

You missed a holiday.
Okay, maybe it wasn't a holiday in the truest sense, but June 10th was definitely a special day.

What was it?

'Twas National Iced Tea Day course ...

Chances are you're thinking at least one of two different things:

1. What is that?
2. Why should I care?

Well, the answer to the first question is relatively simple.
The second depends largely on you.

We at Tea Time 24/7 are feeling pretty generous. We want people to experience the refreshing taste of ice cold tea on a hot summer day ... but why limit that to one calendar day? Therefore, we've decided to have giveaways all summer. It could be tea, lemonade, limeade, pens, pencils, t-shirts ... whatever's clever.

... and actually, we already started. Don't worry, though, because you'll get your chance. Just stay tuned to the usual channels (FacebookTwitter, and Instagram) and your opportunity will appear like magic.

The Question part II

"Heeeeeeeeey, where's the peach tea?"
Bert's Peach Tea

Just how did Bert's Peach Tea come into existence? Here's a brief narrative:

Sunday, December 4, 2011

Bert received a phone call from Roger ... he needed his bartender shift covered at (what used to be known as) Danny's Porch immediately so he could tend to a pressing family issue.
Bert was still new and relatively inexperienced behind the bar, but he made it through the shift without incident.
Toward the end of the night, Bert made use of his free time by thumbing through the "Bar Bible" to see what he could learn about various beverages.
In doing so, he discovered something important about the components of a particular liqueur.
Bert's Peach Lemonade

What if, he thought, what if?

Bert poured a small amount of the liqueur in a glass of ice and added another spirit.
He looked around for something else to go with it, and he found another suitable spirit.
After he was satisfied with the blend he had made, Bert added sweet tea and shook it up.
He tasted it, paused, and smiled, oblivious to the fact that he'd created a catalyst.

As time went on, Bert kept refining his recipe and his brewing methods in order to achieve perfection.
The customers at Danny's appreciated it, but Bert's Peach Tea was merely a concoction that could only be produced at request of those in the know.
It was still too early.

The Question

"Heeeeeeeeey, where's the peach tea?"
Bert's Peach Tea

With those five words, a young college student (known as Skittles) unwittingly sparked a fire.
She coined a phrase that would be spoken, read, and heard constantly.
She provided the basis for a budding company ... and this happened while she was joking around.

Perhaps you've wondered yourself, and this medium has been provided to help you understand.

Who: Tea Time 24/7 (Bert, Trini, Roger, and others) - "It's ALWAYS Time for Tea"

What: Bert's Peach Tea, as well as Phorbidden Phruit and Virgin Sour

Where: Whatever location is convenient for you

When: Whatever time is convenient for you ... remember, it's ALWAYS time for tea (or as some say, "It's after 5:00 somewhere")

Why: Why not?

How: Well ... that's going to be explained in more detail in a later post. Stay tuned.
